Can sugar be blamed for everything?
According to a report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Hungary has the highest obesity rate in Europe, while at world level we are 4th behind the USA, Mexico and New Zealand. OECD says that about 30 percent of Hungary’s adult population is obese and another 30 percent are overweight. The International Sweeteners Association (ISA) had called attention to the fact that the most frequent reasons of obesity are the lack of exercise and too high calorie intake.
Yes, we can blame sugar but probably the biggest problem is that we don’t know what the average Hungarian would eat as ‘healthy food’? Or to put it in another way: Can stores get rid of unhealthy but popular and relatively cheap products? Unfortunately we don’t know the answers yet, but if the current trends prevail, it can happen that new taxes will be imposed on high-demand but unhealthy foods. //
