Magazine: WorldSkills competition in Kazan

In 2019 Kazan hosted the WorldSkills competition, which is also called the Olympic Games of trades. Hungary was represented by 24 young professionals in 22 trades. Bernadett Bíró, secretary of the Guild of Hungarian Restaurateurs (MVI) was there and talked to our magazine about her experiences. Between 23 and 26 August 1,354 competitors from 63 countries gathered to prove their skills in 56 trades. The venue was the huge 5-building complex of the Kazan Expo and there were no less than 250,000 visitors. Zsuzsanna Szemendrey represented Hungary’s cook profession and she finished 38th in the world final; Russia won the gold medal, Poland was the runner-up and China took home the bronze medal.

Gábor Fábián was the Hungarian competitor among waiters. His skilful and confident performance won the audience, he was the first waiter competitor who was applauded!

MVI vice president Zoltán Kis helped Ms Szemendrey’s preparation, while Gundel Restaurant’s talent manager Márk Bori trained Mr Fábián. The Hungarian team’s performance in Kazan was the best ever at WorldSkills.

Krisztián Simon walked away with a gold medal in the furniture maker competition and the Hungarian team came home with 11 medals of excellence. //
