Magazine: Just and sweet!
The state secretariat for national policy declared 2018 to be the memorial year of Matthias Corvinus or as the popular king was also called, Matthias the Just.
Legend has it that his wife Beatrix – the daughter of the king of Naples – brought Italian chefs with her, and it was them who brought marzipan and croquant to Hungary. The guild of confectioners and the Hungarian Croquant Association, the president of which is László Rimóczi, have been organising the Croquant Competition for nine years. In the last few years Hungarian confectioners living in neighbouring countries also came to Lajosmizse to compete with their creations. This year’s croquant and honey cake competition had the theme of Mathias Corvinus and the Renaissance, and there were nearly 70 works competing. Alexandra Dóra Takács from Fertőrákos won the competition with her croquant, titled The Wedding of Matthias and Beatrix; in the honey cake category Judit Ludányi from Eger finished first, with a creation that depicted a page from Matthias Corvinus’ famous codex.

Every year the Cake of Hungary competition is also organised and this year two confectioners, Gábor Dulcz and Balázs Sitkei created the Mathias Rex cake for the contest.
