VPK: Sustainability is the key factor
Sustainability has been an unavoidable topic, whether it’s about business strategy, future planning or responsible operation. As well as the other plants of the VPK Group, the factory from Salonta also takes this question very seriously, says Bart Dobbelaere, Managing Director of VPK Salonta.
– VPK Salonta got the EcoVadis certification, which is an internationally recognized award for business sustainability. What was needed to reach this result?

Bart Dobbelaere, managing director of VPK
– The golden award of EcoVadis means that sustainability is top priority for VPK. However, focusing exclusively on quality is not enough. That is why EcoVadis is an excellent qualification, as it controls the company, the documents and the initiations as well.
– What changes has the skyrocketing of e-commerce brought, concerning the sustainability goals of VPK?
– The development of e-commerce made it clear that the optimization of packaging is a must. Corrugated board and cardboard is a perfect choice instead of plastic. It is very important to recycle and – whenever it’s possible – to reuse corrugated board packaging and use sustainable paper.
– VPK’s sustainability board game, “Smart City” wishes to educate children as well.
– The topic of recycling is hardly present in Eastern European education systems. As children are much more open as we, adults, we thought we would educate them through our game, Smart City, where they can learn the basics of sustainability, and also give over the new knowledge to their parents. Only younger generations can bring changes, that is why we have to invest into their education. (x)
