The green building materials market before it explodes

Today, a construction industry investment in Hungary is only as sustainable as the customer needs it – it was revealed from Wavin’s focus group research.

According to Wavin’s Construction Trend Index, sustainability and health awareness are linked in the construction industry, and this trend is primarily manifested in the selection of building materials: more and more customers are demanding, for example, environmental product declarations from the manufacturer. Wavin also focuses on this area in its research and development, which brings with it the appearance of innovations such as the bio-water pipeline based on used vegetable oil. The green building materials market is on the verge of a real explosion worldwide, its value is expected to increase to 524 billion dollars by 2027.

About 42 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions are “due” to the built environment, but the operation of buildings is responsible for only a third of this – the remaining emissions are linked to the building materials themselves. In addition to energy-efficient operation, it is therefore extremely important what kind of environmental and climatic load the built-in materials represent. This effect is meant to be proven by the so-called EPD (Environmental Product Declaration), i.e. the environmental protection product declaration, which contains transparent and comparable data on the environmental effects of the life cycle of the products – where appropriate, the building material.

Most Wavin products already have an environmental protection product declaration in Hungary.

“We are on the right track, as we are aware of the impact of our products on the environment, and thus we can effectively optimize and make our production chain sustainable, and ultimately our customers receive cleaner, greener and high-performance products and solutions”

– said Anneleen Veldhuizen, Wavin’s sustainability manager responsible for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
