Profession: Communication is key to retaining employees returning after childbirth
In Hungary, returning to the labor market after maternity leave was a challenge for the majority of the women involved, according to the Profession.hu survey. In many cases, employers do not have a sufficiently detailed plan for the cases when one of their employees goes on maternity leave. At the same time, with conscious planning and energy investment, both the company and the employee can more easily overcome the obstacles that arise during the exit process and absence. The way the exit went and the quality of the contact during the maternity leave play a key role in the return of mothers-to-be.
Among the employees who are or were on maternity leave before, every second stated that it was easy to leave, and that their employer specifically supported them in this. A third of them reported a basically smooth process, apart from a few challenges. Every tenth employee complained that their employer was not helpful enough, and nearly as many indicated that they found it very difficult to leave, for which they did not receive adequate support. The research carried out for the job portal’s Human Side initiative revealed that employers are mostly supportive of future parents, and this attitude is decisive for those involved in the long term, from the announcement of pregnancy to leaving due to childbirth – and may even influence future return.
In the case of those employers who supported and tried to make the process of leaving smooth, they can expect much more that their employees with valuable experience will return to them (90%). In addition, according to experience, they will continue their career motivated (91%) and more prepared (80%).
