Collection of used cooking oil at OMV filling stations
Used cooking oil is still not properly treated in many households. Cooking oil that is no longer suitable for food use is considered hazardous household waste, and it can also seriously damage the environment if it is not handled properly, for example, if it is poured down the drain.
For this reason, OMV, supporting professional and easily accessible recycling, has installed storage containers suitable for the collection of used cooking oil at its 40 filling stations across the country, in which the public can safely dispose of grease that is no longer suitable for use in leak-proof containers – preferably in the most suitable screw-cap PET bottles. Butter, fat, margarine, spoiled and expired cooking oil, used cooking oil and cooking fat can also be stored in the containers. The containers can be used around the clock, and OMV’s partner, H-Bio Kft., which specializes in the collection and treatment of used cooking oil, takes care of their removal and replacement.
After collection, the waste is sent to a biodiesel production plant after appropriate cleaning processes
During the processing process, cooking oil is mixed with methanol, as a result of which the glycerin in the oil is separated, while the methanol binds to the fatty acids of the oil. The final product of the process, biodiesel of a quality already suitable for mixing, is used in diesel production, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the propellant.
“In the future, OMV intends to put a lot of emphasis on circular economy solutions, which it does in order to address the challenges of climate change,” said Tibor Balogh, managing director of OMV Hungária Kft. “We are pleased that thanks to the collection containers placed at our filling stations, we can take another step towards protecting our environment.”
In addition to the 40 containers installed at the end of last year, OMV is continuously expanding its network in Hungary with additional collection containers after evaluating experiences and needs.
