Food-to-go trends in 2020
IGD has defined five main directions in the 2020 food-to-go trends: 1. adapting to changing consumption trends, 2. healthy food, 3. sustainability, 4. time- and money-saving solutions in shopping, 5. flexibility and adaptability. Food-to-go is the bridge between retail and the food service sector. Retailers are busy transforming the unused trading area into small food courts. At the same time, restaurants are exploiting the opportunities in to-go food more and more.
2020 will be the year when a growing number of up-and-coming companies will be using food-to-go as a vehicle for sales growth. Next year will also be important in providing consumers with credible information about what constitutes healthy food. Since shoppers are increasingly worried about the environment, both food companies and FMCG retailers need to make changes in their business operations in order to work more sustainably.
There is lots of information available to shoppers about how to invest time and money in a way that they get the best products and services. Food-to-go businesses, retailers and product manufacturers will develop products and services with these needs in mind. New companies are likely to appear in the food-to-go market, as for instance in the USA sales in the sector will grow twice as fast as in the FMCG sector, by 4.7 percent a year. //
