Saint Stephen’s Day is also a celebration of Hungarian confectionery and bakery traditions: thousands of visitors tasted the winning breads, as well as the Cake of Hungary, the Sugar-Free Cake of Hungary, and the Walking Pastry at the Street of Hungarian Flavors.

In this year’s competition announced by the Hungarian Confectioners’ Guild, the cake awarded the title “Cake of Hungary” was DCJ’s *Stílusgyakorlat*, paying tribute to the 140-year legacy of the Dobos cake: the classic dessert was reimagined with cherries and cherry brandy by two pastry chefs of the Kézműves Confectionery of Gyula, László Balogh and Roland Kis. The exciting fusion instantly became a crowd favorite.

The creation of pastry chef Alfréd Kovács from Édes Vonal in Vác, called *Álmodozó* (“Dreamer”), was chosen as this year’s Sugar-Free Cake of Hungary. It offered a guilt-free dessert with cinnamon–chia cherry compote, chocolate cream, and cocoa nibs.

During August 19–20, a total of more than 34,000 slices of the two cakes were consumed.

Another major hit of the past days was the *Augusztusi Álom* (“August Dream”) from the ovens of Három Tarka Macska bakery, which won the Walking Pastry of the Year title from the jury of the Hungarian Bakery Association. This delicacy combines Hungarian and French baking traditions, wrapping brownie and cherry sauce into laminated croissant dough to create an elegant yet festival-friendly dessert. During the event, 1,050 pieces of this pastry were sold, and altogether 4,150 bakery products were consumed including these.

The stars of this year’s Saint Stephen’s Day Bread Contest were no less popular: the Alföldi Pajta bread of Balmaz Bakery, winner of the Saint Stephen’s Day Bread title, is a perfect example of thick, crispy crust and silky crumb, remaining fresh for 7–10 days. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean bread of Varga Bakery, awarded in the Innovative Bread category, brought a Mediterranean flair with extra virgin olive oil, olives, and nuts – both were tasted by tens of thousands. A total of 6,800 loaves of the two breads were consumed by visitors.

The winning cakes and breads are available at numerous confectioneries and bakeries nationwide. The list of confectioneries can be found at cukraszat.net, and the list of bakeries at pekszovetseg.hu.
