Lidl Italia has teamed up with the MyFoody app to reduce food waste by providing greater visibility on items nearing their expiry date.

Myfoody offers consumers a discount of up to 30% on near-expiry items, which are highlighted through a ‘virtual showcase’.

The partnership initially involves 55 (out of the total 650) Lidl stores in the metropolitan areas of Milan, Turin and Bologna.

Users can save their favourite Lidl store in the application, while another section of the app provides users with anti-waste recipes and information about sustainable living.

By the end of 2019, 100% of Lidl-branded products containing eggs will only use eggs from free-range, or organically reared hens.

By 2020, it will replace fluorescent or incandescent lighting systems with LED technologies in all its appliances, with an expected energy-saving of 6.6 million kWh/year.

By 2025, Lidl Italia will reduce plastic consumption by at least 20% and use 100% recyclable plastic in its private label packaging.

Finally, by January 2025, Lidl will reduce the weighted average content of sugar and salt added to its own brand products by 20%.
