Magazine: When buying ham, shoppers prefer branded products
In March-April 2017 combined volume sales of the ‘smoked meat’ and ‘smoked-cooked meat’ categories amounted to 3,944 tons, 6.7 percent more than in the same period of 2016 – reported Nielsen. From this 74 percent was smoked meat and 26 percent was smoked-cooked meat. Zoltán Szántó, senior product manager of Pick Szeged Zrt. informed us that hypermarkets were responsible for 45 percent of seasonal sales. Small and large organised stores’ shares from sales were 22 percent and 19 percent, respectively. Discount supermarkets were at 11 percent. 50 percent of the products purchased were pre-packaged and 50 percent were bought from the deli counter.

PICK Szeged Zrt.’s products performed very well in the 2017 Easter season and sales of PICK Békebeli products augmented by 3 percent if compared with Easter 2016. The most popular of these were PICK Békebeli spare rib, tied ham and fricandeau ham. It is important to note that in the Easter period demand increases not only for smoked meat, but also for smoked-cooked meat products. PICK Békebeli products are available in vacuum-packed format. Shoppers like 0.8-1.1kg products the most.

Kométa 99 Zrt.’s view is that consumers are increasingly conscious: more and more people buy high-quality products, especially in the holiday seasons. Marketing director Krisztina Bódi told our magazine that products sold from the deli counter are still very popular, but the sales performance of pre-packaged products keeps improving.The company’s Italian ham specialties were welcomed very well in the Hungarian market. This Easter their Cotto-type hams will be in the centre of attention, such as Kométa Prague ham or the Oven-baked Prague ham.

Pápai Hús Kft. had an excellent season last Easter, as sales of premium products grew considerably. This Easter the company focuses on this segment even more – revealed director of commerce János Weisz. Products will get a new packaging design. As regards innovation, special emphasis will be placed on health-conscious eating – soon new ham products will be launched in line with this. In the Easter period Pápai Hús will be present in shops with a large quantity of peasant ham. One of their special products is Pápai smoked sliced ham. Shoppers will also find Kőrishegyi ham (the spicy version too), Eszterházy ham, Baked Prague ham, Smoked chop and Sausage-filled chop on store shelves. //
