The 2024 Hungarian work permit changes and their impact on small and medium-sized enterprises
The year 2024 marks a turning point in the history of the Hungarian labor market. The transformation of the work permit system not only brought new challenges, but also offered small and medium-sized enterprises new opportunities to involve third-country workers. With the help of an expert from HÍD Consulting, we reveal the key steps and strategies that small and medium-sized businesses can use to successfully navigate this new environment, exploiting the opportunities inherent in the global labor market.
Legislation amending the employment of third-country nationals
The Hungarian work permit changes in 2024 are reflected in the amendments to several laws, which fundamentally affect the employment of third-country nationals in Hungary. These include but are not limited to:
XC of 2023. Act on the general rules for the entry and residence of third-country nationals
The law tightens the employment of third-country nationals in Hungary, emphasizing that third-country nationals can only be employed under strict conditions. According to the law, third-country nationals must, among other things, have a valid travel document, residence permit or visa, as well as accommodation in Hungary. In addition, they must provide proof of financial support for the entire duration of their stay, including housing and living expenses, as well as insurance or coverage for medical care.
