Vegetables on the grill – or as a side dish
The barbecue season kicks off with the arrival of really good weather, when a wide range of fresh Hungarian peppers and tomatoes become available.

For those who want to start the barbecue season early, for example at Easter or on 1 May, the only domestic peppers available are white peppers, California peppers and hot peppers. The tomato situation is much better, with the full repertoire of the domestic product selection available from Easter, thanks to greenhouse production.
In practical packaging
In the product portfolio of the Southern Great Plain Horticulturists Cooperative, we can find white peppers, bell peppers, pritamin peppers, California peppers, as well as different kinds of tomatoes, e.g. cocktail, cherry, sweet date, etc.
“Sweet peppers such as bell and pritamin are best the for grilling. Cocktail and date tomatoes are also excellent when grilled, bringing out their sweetness even more”,
says president-CEO Sándor Nagypéter.
They also sell packs specifically for grilling, such as the bell pepper grilling pack or the mixed vegetable pack on aluminium tray. This type of packaging is practical because it is heat resistant, so it can be used when grilling and the chopped vegetables don’t fall between the grill grates.
New and exciting “barbecue starters”
Kamil Tóth, account manager of Rijk Zwaan Budapest Kft. informs: as the barbecue season is getting longer, the selection of vegetables available for grilling is growing.
“Courgette and bell pepper have been well-known grilling favourites for years. Now available from local growers, grilling tomatoes have been added to the range, but potatoes are also becoming popular, together with aubergine”,
says Kamil Tóth.
His company enters the market with new products every year, following global and the regional trends of neighbouring countries. In line with the changing consumer demand, there are more and more chemical-free and certified organic farmers in Hungary. At barbecues salads are also present as a side dish or starter. The company’s Salanova® lettuces and Knox™ lettuces have entered the domestic supply chains, together with Crunchy lettuce, which has become the first to be available online as a snack salad.
Salad on a plate rather than on the grill
Eisberg’s product portfolio consists of packaged salads and salad mixes, seasonal salad products, salad bowls, yogurt-based salad dressings and cold-pressed oils.
“Our high season is from the New Year’s resolutions to June, when the first fresh domestically grown seasonal vegetables are ripe. However, there is also demand for our carefully washed and packaged convenience products, which come from trusted sources, during the summer months. We are pleased to see that salads have become important at barbecues”,
says head of sales Judit Szalai.
Not exclusively designed for this purpose but a favourite among consumers is their Cabbage Salad, which can be prepared quickly and easily as a fresh vegetable side dish for barbecues, with the addition of coleslaw dressing or mayonnaise. Salad mixes also add colour to a barbecue and many people buy a healthy, light side dish to go with grilled food.
Vegetable snacks are here
Cropfood TÉSZ Zrt. has a large selection of products, from potatoes to lettuce. During the high season they pay special attention to popular products used for grilling.
“The most common and well-known grilling vegetables are aubergines, courgettes, potatoes, onions and peppers. As a side dish we offer cabbage, carrots and onions for a coleslaw salad, which is an excellent, light accompaniment to meat dishes”,
says sales manager Zsuzsanna Lóczki.
For grilling they offer BBQ packs, an onion mi, a pepper selection, and 300g fresh radish packs. They buy the vegetables from Hungarian producers and the products turn up in the shops within 24 hours.
Otília Horváth, marketing manager of Vitamin Szalon Kft. reports that in addition to traditional grilling vegetables, they have also tried grilling watermelon.
“Opinions on this were mixed, but in any case it is good to know that there are fruit varieties suitable for grilling. Still, aubergines and courgettes are the most recommend for this purpose”,
says the marketing manager.
Vitamin Szalon Kft. has its own grower base, which means that the products they sell can be tracked. At the end of 2023 they developed a new product, called Vegetable Dip Snack: a variety of assorted snack-shaped carrots, English celery, cucumbers and palermo peppers, accompanied by a matching cream.

In spring more and more domestically grown vegetables turn up in shops
From early spring Hungarian vegetables are replacing imported ones in shops. According to the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) and the Hungarian Interprofessional Organisation for Fruit and Vegetable, domestic spring onions are available all year round at the Budapest Wholesale Market. Early domestic lettuce usually appears in stores in February and then quickly gathers momentum until the end of April. Radish can be planted in late winter or early spring. Although its share in the domestic vegetable production is very low, radish is the second most important cold-tolerant vegetable after lettuce. //
