György Vámos: the food price cap has become one year old, the loss is for retailers
As of February 1, 2022, cooking oil, chicken breast, fine flour, pork leg, 2.8 percent UHT milk, granulated sugar and chicken thigh will be subject to a price freeze.
György Vámos, secretary general of the National Trade Association (OKSZ), which represents multi-chains, told 24.hu:
From the introduction of the food price freeze last February until January 12 this year, the rule was that on certain days at least as much of the price freeze products had to be kept in stock as on the same days of the previous year.
On the other hand, from January 12, 2023, at least as much, but if necessary, even twice as much, should be kept based on customer needs, as the average daily stock in 2021, on the same calendar.
He added that if a store received a consumer protection inspection, the specialists of the government office were not satisfied with just what was on the shelf, but also requested and checked the stock register – they were strict, and if they did not find something in order, they fined them, in some cases millions.
There has been a lot of scrutiny on the big chains in connection with the price cap, and since December there has been even more scrutiny than before.
– he told.
