Merkur trials new technology to fight food waste
REWE Group member Austrian retailer Merkur is testing a new anti-food waste technology in several stores. The ‘Smart-Shelf’ technology enables the automatic production of baked goods when the shelf senses that stocks are running low. The weighing system integrated into the shelf recognises when a bakery items is taken off the shelf, and sends this information to a connected automatic oven; then the oven can replace what was purchased.
