The amount of salt and sugar in LIDL products continues to decrease
As a responsible company, Lidl Hungary is committed to promoting healthy nutrition, as evidenced by its commitment in 2019, according to which it will reduce the added salt and sugar content of its own brand products by an average of 20 percent by 2025. The success of the optimization program is demonstrated by the fact that the discount chain used 909.5 tons less added sugar and 97.5 tons less added salt in the production of food over the past four years. Promoting conscious eating is also an important goal of Lidl, and for this purpose it cooperates with the National Association of Hungarian Dietitians.
In order to create a diverse and high-quality product range, Lidl works closely with its suppliers and closely monitors changing customer needs. In the case of sugar, the discount chain focuses primarily on foods popular with children, including breakfast cereals, yogurts, biscuits, sweet pastries, ice creams and desserts. And the amount of added salt was primarily reduced for those products that are regularly consumed in Hungary and which usually make up a large part of the daily salt intake, such as bread and buns, meats and sausages or salty snacks and chips. It is important that the supermarket chain does not replace sugar with artificial sweeteners or other sugar substitutes, but during the development, good taste remains the primary priority and it is important that it fully meets the expectations of consumers. “Over the past year, we have modified the recipes of more than 80 products in order to ensure that, in addition to the usual delicious taste, our foods can be prepared with less added salt and sugar, taking health into account. Thanks to this, we used 55.5 tons less salt and 377.4 tons less sugar for these foods in the 2021 economic year. We communicate the affected products transparently to our customers. We provide special markings in the stores and in our advertising magazine, and all the optimized products can be found on our website,” said Judit Tőzsér, Head of Corporate Communications at Lidl Hungary.
In September of this year, the company again launched the program Healthy on the school bench
It was launched for the first time in 2015 in order to draw attention to the importance of healthy nutrition for children, and at the same time share related knowledge with parents. As a professional partner, Lidl has been working with the National Association of Hungarian Dietitians from the beginning. This year, the focus is on healthy breakfast preparation, and in the framework of an online survey, the supermarket chain wants to find out in what form health-conscious food preparation is present in family kitchens. “A healthy lifestyle plays an important role in the prevention of diseases, an important part of which is the consumption of the right amount of salt and sugar. Although it takes time to change eating habits, we can always decide to choose as many foods as possible for our health that fit better into a healthier diet. It is important to expand the range of products that offer a more health-conscious alternative, which makes the situation easier for customers. Lidl provides help for this on a daily basis,” said Zsuzsa Szűcs, president of the MDOSZ.
The discount chain’s discount offer, valid from October 29, will include many salt- and sugar-optimized products. More information about the salt and sugar optimization program can be found on the company’s website. Details of the Egészsésen az skolapadban competition and online survey can be found at www.lidl.hu/iskolapad.
