A bill is being prepared against food waste in Spain
1,300 tons of food is thrown away every year in Spain – this unfavorable trend is meant to be changed by the new bill, which makes it mandatory that from the beginning of 2023, shops and restaurants plan how to reduce the amount of food that was previously thrown away.
Luis Planas, Spain’s Minister of Food and Agriculture, called the draft a “groundbreaking legal instrument” to solve problems in the supply chain. The proposal follows the French and Italian examples.
The draft legislation also covers the use of overripe fruits. In this case, the representatives recommend making jam, jam or juice from the fruits. If this is not possible, as a last resort it is recommended to use it as feed or biofuel.
“The primary task would be to prevent food loss and waste. The goal is not to donate the surplus. However, this can be read from this draft”
– said Laura Martos, an employee of one of the NGOs fighting against food waste.
