Beiersdorf Acquires Majority Stake In Belgian Life-Science Firm S-Biomedic
Skin care giant Beiersdorf has acquired a majority stake in S-Biomedic NV, a Belgian life-science company involved in skin microbiome research.
In 2018, Beiersdorf invested in S-Biomedic as part of its corporate venture capital activities, and its latest move will further consolidate their collaboration.
S-Biomedic will continue to be managed as a standalone entity under Beiersdorf’s existing microbiome programme and complement the company’s research activities in this field, the Nivea-maker noted.
Dr Gitta Neufang, senior vice president of research and development at Beiersdorf, said, “As skin care experts, research has been at the heart of what we have been doing for 140 years. Therefore, the acquisition of S-Biomedic is an ideal strategic fit to drive our innovation power even further in line with our C.A.R.E.+ strategy. Together with the pioneers of S-Biomedic we are taking skincare to the next level and will foster the development of solutions for unmet consumer needs.”
In the last few years, microbiome research has gained much attention in science as it offers starting points for skin care innovations.
Founded by Veronika Oudova and Bernhard Paetzold in 2014, S-Biomedic focuses on the balance of the skin’s microbiome and develops active ingredients for cosmetic products by using living skin bacteria.
The microbiome of the skin is a habitat of billions of bacteria and an essential factor for skin health and the lack of balance in the skin microbiome triggers skin diseases like acne.
