Dozens of Hungarian wines were awarded at the largest German wine competition
Almost a hundred Hungarian wines won medals at the largest competition in Germany, the Berliner Wein Trophy (BWT), organized under the auspices of the International Organization of Viticulture and Wine (OIV), the results of which were announced on Wednesday in the German capital.
Of the 325 Hungarian wines entered with the cooperation of the Hungarian Embassy in Berlin, 95 received gold medals, and two – one from Tokaj and one from Balatonboglár – won the highest award, the so-called Grand Gold Medal. Hungary is thus in eighth place – after Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Portugal, Austria and China – and the distribution of medals by wine region indicates that Tokaj, Badacsony, Szekszárd and Villány performed well among the others. It is also an outstanding result that six gold medals were won by domestic organic wines, that is, Hungarian wines made from grapes grown in an ecologically sustainable system without absorbing chemicals.
The BWT has been organized since 2004, with two judging rounds per year, in February and July
Organized by the German Wine Marketing Association (DWM), approximately four hundred international experts evaluate approximately 14,000 wines annually in the two rounds combined. Based on the rules of the competition, no more than 30 percent of the entire field can receive recognition. Another prestigious German wine festival, Mundus Vini’s spring judging round, also ended in the past few days, at which 242 experts from 46 countries evaluated more than 7,500 wines. According to the results presented on Tuesday at the Prowein international trade fair in Dusseldorf, three Hungarian wines – one from Villány, one from Szekszárd and one from Tokaj – were awarded with a large gold medal, and 16 Hungarian wines received gold medals.
Prowein is the world’s most prestigious trade fair for wine and spirits. At this year’s edition, which ended on Tuesday, Hungary participated with the national stand called Wines of Hungary, organized by the Agrármarketing Centrum (AMC). The country’s finest wines and fruit spirits were presented at the event, including specialties such as Tokaji Eszencia.
