Statistical report 2022
Every year the Guild of Hungarian Restaurateurs (MVI) publishes a statistical report on the hospitality sector, using data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH).
Just like in former years, MVI’s presidential advisor Károly Zerényi prepared the 2021 annual report. This reveals that there are approximately 140,000 people working in the sector. Because of the pandemic, hospitality’s direct contribution to the country’s GDP dropped to 5.1% in 2020. At the end of 2021 there were less than 48,000 hospitality units in Hungary; 3,400 places went out of business since 2019. Only 31% of hospitality units were operated by sole traders in 2021 – 10 years earlier this proportion was nearly 40%.
Sales data
In 2019, the last year before the pandemic, gross sales by hospitality units amounted to HUF 1,465bn, 14.2% more than one year earlier. In 2020 the pandemic cut sales by 27.3% and the result was HUF 1,065bn. In 2021 total gross sales reached HUF 1,314bn, 23.3% more than in 2020, but 10.3% less than in 2019. Consumer prices in hospitality increased by 6.2% in 2021, which was bigger than the average consumer price index (105.1%). However, prices started to rise faster because of the negative global trends at the end of the last year. //
