Fresh bread with a crispy crust, bread tied with a national ribbon, seeded buns, red-white-green loaves, onion-honey and raspberry-pistachio flavored bakery products. These are just a few examples of the products that were on the table of the Hungarian Bakers’ Association on June 14 and 15. This is the twelfth year that the organization has announced its professional competition. The aim of the competition in 2023 is also to encourage bakery companies to create the most exciting, innovative and unusual bakery products, thus enriching the selection of one of our most basic foods, bread.

The fact that this year the bakers entered with more than ever before, i.e. a total of 85 products, clearly reflects the effort that the traditional test of the master bakers keeps the baking industry in continuous development. The popularity and prestige of the competition is shown by the fact that, in addition to the bakeries based in Budapest and the Pest county, there are artisan, sourdough or large-scale bakers from almost all parts of the country, who simultaneously began to figure out what masterpieces to compete for this year’s Bread of the Year, Innovative Bread of the Year and Walking Cake of the Year. The judging committee could evaluate baked goods that came from the Northern Hungary region (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Heves and Nógrád counties), but the Northern Great Plain region was also represented (Hajdú-Bihar, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg counties). In addition, there were breads and cakes whose makers came from the Southern Great Plain region (Bács-Kiskun, Csongrád-Csanád counties) and the Southern Transdanubia region (Baranya and Somogy counties). In addition, the news of the professional competition of the Hungarian Bakers’ Association also reached the Western Transdanubia region, as entries were also received from the county of Győr-Moson-Sopron.
