Shady Girl cone flower, MATE’s new official variety
As a result of several years of research and breeding work, the variety candidate Rudbeckia hirta of the Ornamental Cultivation and Green Area Management Research Group of the MATE Institute of Landscape Architecture, Urban Development and Ornamental Gardening was protected by CPVO, which thus became an official variety.
The variety was named ‘Shady Girl’ due to its stocky stature and intense, dark brown flower colors. The Shady Girl cone flower is a medium-tall variety with a bushy habit. Its extremely showy, brownish-purple and brownish-red ray flowers have an almost black cloud. The ray flowers are wide, the inflorescence size is large, the shape is round and simple. Its leaves are long and wide, heavily hairy, which increases its drought tolerance.
The new variety can be used perfectly in traditional annual beds, but it is also suitable for enhancing the decorative value of perennial beds
This year, the super-elite seed of the variety is produced by the Ornamental Plant and Green Area Management Research Group and handed over for commercial seed production to the business association designated for variety utilization. It is expected to be commercially available after 2026. The variety will continue to be maintained by the Ornamental Plant Growing and Green Area Management Research Group.
