PLMA logoFMCG retail is a pillar of social stability

Last time PLMALive.eu, the monthly video magazine of the Private Label Manufacturers Association was about the influence of COVID-19 on European retail, and the role of retailers in the pandemic. It was told that private label products and the background supply chain play a key role in reducing risks. //

Retail chains for ensuring the supply of essential products

Retailers were fighting in the frontline of the pandemic, for instance, Tesco opened pop-up stores next to pandemic hospitals. In spite of the product shortage, retailers donated lots of FMCG products to people in need via charity organisations. Demand increased sharply for online grocery orders and consumers downloaded many new apps. Carrefour started compiling food boxes with the key – mostly private label – FMCG products. They teamed up with Uber Eats for fast delivery. //

Private labels in the global pandemic

Very often it is small or medium-sized companies that supply retailers with private label products. They are exposed to external factors very much, especially if they rely on a single raw material supplier – even more so if it is Chinese. The pandemic showed: in the future, such organisations will be needed that can react rapidly to crisis situations because FMCG retail is one of the key factors in social stability. //

The latest news from Europe

Tesco UK has decided to postpone all development projects that would double the retailer’s online activities, as the company is concentrating all of its resources on the coronavirus situation. In Norway Coop and national postal service Posten Norge joined forces to start an FMCG home delivery service.

In Germany, DM did a brief test period before launching the Express Pickup service. The order must arrive in shops just 6 hours after being placed online. Another German drugstore chain Rossmann continues its expansion and enters the Spanish market. //
