Hungarian companies are optimistic about their economic situation, but cautious about their staffing plans

Although the majority of companies expect stability or improvement in their own economic situation next year, their plans for their employee numbers are more cautious. The labor market situation this year has brought employers an average reduction in recruitment time and better candidates, so their complaints about the qualities of applicants have decreased, but significantly more people complained about their commitment during the recruitment process – according to Profession.hu’s recent research for the HR Overview publication.
Confident economic expectations
The survey addressed how the employers surveyed see the next year in terms of their economic situation. The answers do not paint a negative picture compared to previous years. Only 12 percent of companies expect a decrease, and there has been no significant difference in the past two years. However, the proportion of those expecting stagnation has increased since last year, from 30 to 34 percent. Based on data from the past two years, nearly half of employers expect an improvement in the aforementioned area, and this has not changed significantly since 2023. During the pandemic, in 2022, companies were much more pessimistic about their own expected business situation, with only one-third planning growth in this area.Caution in the field of staffing
Compared to the quite optimistic expectations regarding the economic situation, companies have made less bold statements regarding the development of the number of employees. Four out of ten companies plan to increase their number of employees next year: this shows a 6 percentage point decline compared to last year’s plans, and the proportion of those expecting a reduction in staffing has increased in parallel. This value has been decreasing since 2023, with nearly half of respondents planning to expand their workforce in that year.
Since the pandemic, the proportion of companies expecting a decline in the number of employees has gradually increased; this year, this proportion is 17 percent, which is double the figure measured in the year of the pandemic. In the same regard, roughly the same number of companies expect stagnation as last year.
Shortening recruitment time, more frequent quality complaints
Companies also expect a decrease in the average time needed to fill a position. Since 2022, fewer and fewer employers have been expecting longer recruitment times in the coming year: while in the aforementioned year 46 percent of companies expected recruitment processes to take longer than in the previous year, this year only 27 percent expect this. The proportion of employers expecting no change in this area also increased continuously during the mentioned period, from 44 to 56 percent, as did the proportion of companies predicting shorter recruitment processes, from 10 to 17 percent.
“This change can be justified by the decrease in the number of job advertisements and the still high level of employee activity. Based on the employers’ responses, the proportion of applicants who are less committed has increased: they withdraw from the process or simply terminate the relationship with the company that received their application without any indication. Last year, 26 percent of employers reported a similar problem, and this year the proportion has increased to 34 percent. However, the labor market situation has brought about a qualitative improvement in terms of applicants: fewer employers reported deficiencies in the candidates’ professional skills or language skills. The increased number of applicants has made it more difficult for companies to select suitable candidates.
