Summer seasonal inspection: focus on gyros and grilled products
Restaurants selling gyros and products for home grilling: “natural” chicken meat, as well as already marinated and seasoned meat, as well as grill trays, were inspected by food safety experts during the summer seasonal inspection. Nébih inspectors initiated proceedings against several gyros due to hygiene and monitoring problems, and the operation of one facility was temporarily suspended. There were also problems with the products tested in the laboratory, the presence of Salmonella was found in several cases of the marinated chicken meat tested.
Street “skewing”
In the last two weeks of July, Nébih specialists conducted an official inspection in 7 gyros distribution units in the capital. In addition to the general hygiene inspection, samples were also taken of fried gyro meats and ready-to-eat salads. The laboratory tests found everything to be appropriate, however, the inspectors initiated proceedings against 5 units selling gyros due to hygiene and traceability deficiencies. The operation of a gyros had to be temporarily suspended. The unit has since been re-inspected, the defects corrected and the required cleaning carried out, allowing it to continue operating.
Home grilling products
Grilling is a popular program of summer garden parties, for which prepackaged grill trays, typically made of aluminum, are a great help. Nébih employees took samples from 15 products in order to examine the dissolution of individual metals and their sensory properties in the laboratory. The tests did not reveal any problems in any case, i.e. these products can be used safely, of course, if the manufacturer’s instructions are followed.
Among the foods that go on the grill, samples were taken of chicken meat in trays, cut into pieces with shielding gas, as well as ready-to-cook, marinated and seasoned meats. In the case of the latter range of products, the inspectors also sampled products at production sites and commercial units.
