Not only jobs need protection, entrepreneurs too!
In the hospitality sector not only the owners of businesses, but guests are losing patience, too. Still, attempts at reopening without permission can be harmful for the whole trade. By October it became clear that the situation was worse than it had been expected and the layoffs started.
The government’s support focuses only on preserving jobs, but it forgets about keeping enterprises alive. Even if some of the businesses have enough money left to reopen after the pandemic, their situation will remain uncertain because it can’t be told how big the upturn in consumer demand will be – if people will have less money than before, more bars and restaurants will be forced to close. My estimation is that about half of the owners have a chance for survival. What we would need now is collective thinking about partial reopening, and would be suspending the tax and social security contribution payment obligation on employee salaries during the pandemic. //
