Agriculture Minister István Nagy reminded on his social media page that the summer harvest is taking place on almost 1.8 million hectares, and the size of the autumn sowing areas is above average in the current farming year. The corn and canola were in good condition when the work began. In the case of these crops, the national quantity and average yield of the crop promises to be lower compared to preliminary expectations, but of course significantly better than last year’s historic drought year, he added. He emphasized that more than three quarters of the autumn barley has already been harvested, and based on the current yield, a result of around 2.1 million tons is expected, compared to the amount of 1.4 million tons in 2022. The winter wheat production area has increased significantly compared to previous years, this year a harvest of around 5.5 million tons is expected. The head of the ministry was quoted as saying that autumn rapeseed – with 189,000 hectares of sowing area, 50,000 hectares less than last year, promises to be a good average yield, with a total yield of around 614,000 tons.

István Nagy also mentioned that the spring sowings with the total area of 2.1 million hectares essentially correspond to the magnitude of previous years

However, there is a shift in the sown area, this year’s sunflower sowing area of 678 thousand hectares increased compared to the average of previous years, in addition to the decrease of the corn sowing area this year to 746 thousand hectares. Market processes and the relatively low crop average of last year’s drought are behind the change, he indicated. Due to the summer harvest work, there are more agricultural machinery on the roads, so the Minister of Agriculture asks for patience and extra attention from drivers. In order to avoid accidents, always drive carefully when you see combine harvesters, tractors, and transport vehicles – the head of the ministry called attention, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
