The 2024 barbecue season got off to a slow start, but then it gained momentum. A cooler spring was followed by a hot summer, and the effects of inflation have gradually subsided.

Interest in unique flavours and premium grill products is growing

“As regards volume sales, demand for premium and convenience products increased, while a moderate decrease was observed for products in the lower price range. In terms of profitability, products with a bigger added value proved to be the most stable segment”,

summarised Beáta Bukovenszki, head of domestic sales at Gallicoop Zrt.

Saving on size, not flavours

There has been a shift towards smaller pack sizes, reflecting the changing purchasing power of households.

“Hungarian consumers are conservative. Even if they try new and exotic product versions, finally they return to the tried and tested flavours, such as grilling products with paprika, black pepper or cheese. People really like mix packs”,

informs Zsolt Kazai, sales manager of Wiesbauer-Dunahús Zrt.

“Food is all about trust, so it is no wonder that consumers like to be fully aware of the origin of the food they are putting on the table. The biggest advantage of the black-tray, premium fresh meat products bearing the PICK fresh meat logo is their compliance with strict standards and full traceability. Our products are made from meat from pigs fed only non-GMO, antibiotic-free feed”,

emphasises Tünde Matyasovszky, senior brand manager of Bonafarm Zrt. (Valdor & Pick Fresh Meat).

One of the most popular grilling product from PICK Premium Fresh Meats is pork loin and ribs.

This season GALLICOOP Zrt. is offering pre-marinated grilling meats in addition to its well-established grilling sausages, which meet modern consumer expectations not only in taste but also in terms of healthy ingredients. They have also taken sustainability into account in their innovation work, so the company’s packaging solutions have been upgraded to have a smaller ecological footprint.

Due to changes in households’ purchasing power a shift towards smaller sizes can be observed

Flavour combinations from Stuttgart

This year Wiesbauer-Dunahús Zrt. is adding three new products to its assortment: the popular 250g Stuttgart white grill sausage is now available in bacon, cheese and cheese-bacon variants too. In sales promotion the company will stick to its well-established promotional activities, in collaboration with its partners, and further strengthen its presence on social media. Pápai Hús is preparing for the 2025 season with a new look and new products. The company is launching its new GrillMe brand, which will come out in four flavours in 240g size: dried tomato and cheese grilling sausage, jalapeno pepper and chilli grilling sausage, garlic grilling sausage, and honey and ginger grilling sausage. //

The market share of private label products remains considerable, but quality and sustainability considerations are becoming increasingly important when it comes to purchasing decisions for manufacturer brands
