About 1.8 million tons of food waste is produced in Hungary every year
One of the consequences of galloping food prices is that the value of food thrown in the trash can be much higher this year than it was a few years ago. In the case of a family of four, up to HUF 90,000 worth of food can end up in the bin every year.
Food prices are galloping at a speed not seen for a long time, and it is not yet clear when the rise in prices will end, so it has become more important than ever to reduce the amount of food that becomes waste to a minimum through smart planning and proper storage.
Globally, a third of the food produced for human consumption, about 1.3 billion tons, ends up as waste or goes to waste every year. According to data from the UN’s agricultural organization, FAO, the amount of food waste produced annually in the wealthy countries of the world (222 million tons) is not far behind the total annual food production of sub-Saharan Africa (230 million tons), and in Europe, as much food is wasted as would be enough for 200 million for man. About 1.8 million tons of food waste is generated in Hungary every year, a significant proportion of which – about a third – is produced in households.
