Association of Hungarian Meat Industry: such sausages should no longer be bought
The annual sale of hot dogs in Hungary is around 34,000 tons, and 10-25 percent of this is sold in the last month of the year, according to the joint statement of the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy (NAK) and the Hungarian Meat Industry Association (Húszövetség).
Although according to the traders’ experience, customers prefer cheaper products, for example, the turnover of sausages with sheep casings decreases and the demand for sausages with artificial casings, collagen, and skinned sausages increases, it is expected that they will be willing to pay more for higher quality sausages during the holiday season.
NAK and the Meat Association warn that Hungarian products should be preferred when choosing hot dogs for New Year’s Eve. The products of domestic manufacturers can be traced, they are constantly checked and designed for the domestic taste.
According to the strict regulations of the Food Code, the meat content of hot dogs must be at least 51 percent of the finished product. If the meat content is lower or if there is more than 10 percent mechanically defatted meat in the product, it is no longer classified as hot dog. It is important to point out that too many additives can cause a deterioration in quality, so it is worth paying attention to the composition of the product when buying and choosing quality hot dogs.
