Luxury on a plate: the world’s most expensive Michelin-starred restaurants in 2024
Chef’s Pencil has published its list of the most expensive Michelin-starred restaurants of 2024, showing where the most exclusive and expensive tasting menus are offered. Japanese cuisine dominates the top spot this year, but it’s not just Japan that has some of the most expensive restaurants. According to the list, the most expensive dining experience costs more than 830,000 forints, while Hungary’s most expensive Michelin-starred menu costs 87,000 forints – írja a VG.hu.
The world’s most expensive restaurant: Ginza Kitafuku, Tokyo
The list is led by Ginza Kitafuku in Tokyo, where the most expensive menu item costs $2,130, or more than 830,000 forints. The restaurant’s specialty is Echizen crab, which can only be caught in Japan’s Fukui prefecture. The high-end gastronomic dishes are made from one of the most expensive varieties of snow crab, the Kiwami Echizen crab, which is extremely rare. In 2021, for example, only 67 of these crabs were caught, and each specimen could cost up to $7,000. Due to the crab’s sweet, soft meat, the Japanese imperial family has the right of first refusal, which further increases the exclusivity of the dish.
Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet, Shanghai
Second place is taken by the Chinese restaurant Ultraviolet, where the premium menu costs $1,230 (about 480 thousand forints). The restaurant’s specialty is that the gastronomic experience is complemented by visual design, music and aromas, thus offering a dinner combined with a real theatrical performance. The meal is made even more unforgettable by pairing it with champagne, wine and cocktails.
Caviar Russe and Masa, New York
In the American ranking, Caviar Russe from New York and Masa, also from New York, are at the top. Caviar Russe’s $975 menu offers an 11-course caviar-centric menu, with artistic craftsmanship and luxurious flavors. Masa, a three-Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant, offers a special omakase menu for $950, offering a unique and spiritual culinary experience.
Europe’s Most Expensive: Alchemist, Copenhagen
The title of Europe’s most expensive restaurant is held by Alchemist in Copenhagen, where a dinner costs $760. The restaurant’s gastronomic offerings are a fusion of art, theater, and scientific innovation. Chef Rasmus Munk aims to make every dish a thought-provoking experience while stimulating all of the senses.
Hungary: Platán Gourmet, Tata
Hungary also made it onto the Chef’s Pencil list with Platán Gourmet in Tata, which boasts two Michelin stars. The country’s most expensive tasting menu costs 87,000 forints, which is modest by international standards. The chefs aim to provide a memorable experience through the quality of their ingredients and special techniques.
