Hungarians buy fewer baked goods
The majority of Hungarian bakeries escaped closure, however, due to the rising price of bread, the population buys less baked goods.
According to the president of the Hungarian Bakers’ Association, due to the epidemic and the rise in energy prices, 20-25 percent of the baking industry companies were expected to cease or be acquired, but this did not happen.
“The number of bakeries is around 850-900, this does not include the Albanian bakeries and the bakeries at supermarkets. Although the Hungarian Bakers’ Association had previously predicted that 20-25 percent of bakery companies would cease to exist due to the epidemic and rising energy prices, close or the big ones buy them out, but that didn’t happen”
József Septe, president of the Hungarian Bakers Association, told Napi.hu.
In recent years, bread consumption has decreased in Hungary due to the coronavirus epidemic, the war and inflation. The annual average bread consumption per person decreased from 72 kilograms to 50-52 kilograms.
