Less egg, lower price

Data from the Agricultural Economics Research Institute’s (AKI) market price information system (PÁIR) reveal that in Hungary volume sales of M and L sized eggs dropped 13 percent on weeks 1-12 in 2014 from the same period of 2013; the HUF 20/piece price at the place of packaging was 11 percent lower than in the base period.

According to a short-term forecast by the European Commission, egg production in the EU is going to grow by 0.4 percent to 7.3 million tons this year. In Hungary egg production is expected to reduce by 2.6 percent. In January 2014 in terms of live weight 20 percent less cattle was slaughtered than in the same period of 2013. KSH (Central Statistical Office) data indicates that Hungary’s live cattle export fell by 19 percent in 2013. Austria was our main market where 8.4 thousand tons were sold and 4.1 thousand tons of Hungarian cattle went to Lebanon. Our beef export decreased by 1.5 percent in the same period; 67 percent of our total beef export was sold in the Netherlands and Austria.
