Tesco cuts emissions by more than 89,000 ton of food waste
If we do not change our way of life, food will be responsible for the highest emissions by 2030. 931 million tonnes of food waste is generated each year in households, traders and other food processes.
It is not surprising, then, that 8% of global greenhouse gas production is caused by food that lands in rubbish. Tesco is committed to combating food waste on the road from farm to table, and in 2017 it was the first retailer in Central Europe to release a report on the amount of surplus food generated by its operations.
Since then, the supermarket chain has reduced its food waste by 68% in Hungary, contributing 89,590 to reducing emissions.
