This is how the bread competition of the Hungarian Bakers’ Association ended
True to the traditions of the Hungarian Bakers’ Association, in 2023 it held its bread competition for the twelfth time. The public was able to meet for the first time the first place winner of St. Stephen’s day bread, the winner of the Innovative category and the first prize winner of the Stroller cake category, at the ceremonial award ceremony held in the Parliament.
The popularity and prestige of the competition is shown by the fact that, in addition to the bakeries based in Budapest and the Pest county, there are artisan, sourdough or large-scale bakers from almost all parts of the country who applied for the titles of this year’s Bread of the Year, Innovative Bread of the Year and Walking Pastry of the Year. The judging committee could evaluate baked goods that came from the counties of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Heves and Nógrád, Hajdú-Bihar, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Bács-Kiskun, Csongrád-Csanád, Baranya and Somogy, Győr-Moson-Sopron.
In the first round of judging, the five-person professional jury evaluated 29 Szent István daily and 34 Innovative breads, as well as 22 Walking Cakes. Ilonka Boldizsár, president of the jury, ambassador of the World Bakery and Confectionery Association, János Bajusz, plant manager of COOP Szolnok Zrt., Kázzpári Kázzpári, managing director of Fristen Kft., István Király, founder of Király Pék és Társa Bt., and Zoltán Kovács, The manager of Katica Pékség és Kávé és Teaház scored the products anonymously, taking into account professional aspects.
Dr. Beáta Olga Felkai – deputy state secretary responsible for food chain supervision at the Ministry of Agriculture and Dr. György Pleva – chief veterinarian of the Food and Feed Safety Directorate of the National Food Chain Safety Office were invited to the second round of public press judging.
