The living dead: How the burnout syndrome keeps taking lives?
Many people suffer from burnout and this illness signals that it is time one made changes in their life! We could say that untreated distress is the mother of the burnout syndrome and conformity is its father. Its birth is assisted by consumer society’s special set of values, but one’s job and individual characteristics also play a role in acquiring this illness. In order to realise that we suffer from burnout and to be able to cope with it successfully, we have to understand precisely what is behind the name. Burnout syndrome is a set of symptoms, those who have it become mentally exhausted and after while goals and the things which need to be done to achieve them become meaningless to them. A state of hopelessness develops and its final stage might be death. Thomas M. H. Bergner identified three stages of the burnout syndrome: the first stage is the phase of activity and aggression. In this stage the person who has burnout typically denies it. In the second stage the person is trying to get away from it all, they make a retreat. They are less enthusiastic and empathy gives way to cynicism. They start to get anxious and find it difficult to concentrate. The third stage is when one becomes isolated and passive. They become unmotivated and end relationships. They feel empty and might start using prescription drugs, alcohol or drugs. A state of depression develops and there is a chance that the person with burnout syndrome commits suicide.
