It is important that customers recognize the advantages of domestic products
A priority goal is to make domestic fresh and high-quality food available to everyone at an affordable price, stated Dr. Márton Nobilis, State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture responsible for food industry and trade policy, Zsendúlés VIII. In his presentation at the Horticultural Conference on Thursday in Szeged.
The State Secretary drew attention to the importance of a short supply chain. Local producers and traders can also win with this, as the cost of transport and storage can be reduced, thus reducing the ecological footprint. Dr. Márton Nobilis presented the latest research of the National Food Chain Safety Office, according to which the proportion of Hungarian products in the 10 largest domestic retail chains has changed positively in terms of fruits and vegetables. At least 150 types of fresh vegetables and fruits are available on the shelves of these stores every week.
The State Secretary also mentioned that about 1.8 million tons of food waste is generated in Hungary every year, which is 10-11% of all food purchases
A significant proportion of this – about a third – is produced in households. Based on the most recent data, this amount means approximately 65 kilograms per person, on an annual basis. The estimated EU average is higher, 70 kg/person. Dr. Márton Nobilis also reminded that in order to reduce the generation of food waste, the NÉBIH developed its program called “No Residue”. The campaign’s four professional working groups compiled guides and aids that can serve as guidelines for reducing food waste. He explained that we will also have national champions in the food industry, who will be able to stand up on the world market as well. While in the 2014-2020 support period, the sector received more than HUF 468 billion from domestic and EU funds, in the current (2021-2027) period, even more funds are available.
HUF 750 billion were allocated from the Rural Development Program for food industry developments.
The purpose of this is to encourage the production of products with a higher added value, for which the demand on the foreign market is also higher, so innovation and development complexity are taken into account as priority aspects in calls for tenders – added Dr. Márton Nobilis.
