Bite-sized trends
There is no generally accepted definition of finger food. When our magazine writes about finger food, what we mean is every kind of food that can be eaten without using cutlery, or food that is eaten not only with knife and fork in hand but also the food itself or what it is served in – plate, box., etc. More and more types of finger food are available to consumers, and food quality is also improving.
According to János Volosinovszki, managing director of Nádudvari Élelmiszer Kft., the finger food category is increasingly popular in Hungary. There is nothing surprising about this, as finger food is a convenience product – it can be prepared quickly and easily. Food company Nádudvari serves gastro partners with finger food made from vegetables and cheese.
László Markovits, CEO of Marnevall informed that the finger food market is growing, as finger food has become trendy in both the hospitality sector and at corporate events. Marnevall makes Kentucky-style chicken bites, cheese bites and chicken wings in various flavours.
Finger food isn’t luxury stuff anymore, and the fact that it is affordable makes the category accessible to a wide range of consumers. It is ideal in the HoReCa sector where there aren’t enough workers at the moment: ready-to-cook frozen food requires no preparation work in the kitchen – told Mr Volosinovszki. Mr Markovits added that street food isn’t a trend but a phenomenon: everyone inspires the company’s work and innovations. A good example of this is their latest beef burger.
Balázs Marsovszki, the owner of Style Events & Catering informed us that partners welcome finger food in the world of catering. He revealed that what they do isn’t classic innovation work: partners decide what they would like and contact the Style Events & Catering with their ideas. They can do a finger food version of any kind of dish. At the parties that they organise 95 percent of the courses served are made by the company, they only use food from other sources if it represents the same high quality and it would take a lot of time to prepare it. The world of street food doesn’t inspire the company’s work, so unless the partner demands it, they don’t serve mini burgers or wraps at events.
Attila Hajdu, managing director of Sanitech Hungary Kft. reckons that the finger food segment is growing dynamically in the hospitality industry because the market has realised that finger food can be presented in a spectacular fashion. Sanitech Hungary Kft. develops tableware and cutlery products tailored to the needs of serving finger food. In line with the latest environmental trends, bamboo tableware, wooden cutlery and items made from recycled paper are used at more and more catering events.
