EU Presidency – AM: BIOEAST member countries draw attention to the importance of research and innovation related to the sustainable use of natural resources in a joint statement
The consecutive Hungarian EU presidency, in cooperation with the BIOEAST initiative, organized a high-level political forum in Brussels to promote research and innovation in Central and Eastern Europe, the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) told MTI on Thursday.
According to the information, the declaration and manifesto supported by the 10 member states were presented, in which they emphasize the importance of creating a joint research and innovation partnership covering the whole of Europe, but focusing on the priorities of the macro-region. The goal was the sustainable production of agricultural, forestry and freshwater raw materials and their transformation into products with greater added value. From the point of view of the sustainable socio-economic development of Europe, special attention must be paid to the preservation of food security and the potential inherent in the biomass-based economy, they wrote in the announcement. A policy forum was held in Brussels at the permanent representation of Hungary with the participation of representatives of the 27 member states and European institutions. At the event called “Partnering for the Future”, in addition to Hungary, a joint statement of 22 ministers of agriculture and research from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Croatia, Poland, Latvia, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia was presented. The policy forum discussed the development of Central and Eastern European research and innovation in the framework of sustainable natural resource management, food security and policy development of the biomass-based economy, they wrote. The representatives of the 10 member states issued a joint statement, the focus of which is on the topics of European sustainable resources, soil and water, food security, and the biomass-based economy. The document also draws attention to the dialogue on European strategic autonomy and our role in the global food supply chain.
According to the announcement, in addition to policy issues related to agriculture and research, EU enlargement was also discussed at the meeting
The participants of the event agreed that the EU frameworks and resources for research and innovation can play a significant role in the cohesion of the EU member states and in the accession process of the countries of the Western Balkans and the Eastern Partnership. The joint European research and innovation partnership, which focuses on the needs of the Eastern European macro-region, can help with this. The BIOEAST initiative asks the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, and the European Parliament to take into account the joint statement of the 10 member states in the strategic planning process of the financial framework for the next period, the Ministry of Agriculture wrote.
