Small stores in a strong position
The value of retail sales of spirits grew by 8 per cent, while the quantity of sales grew by 4 per cent in the October 2005–September 2006 period compared to the previous year. The total market exceeded HUF 60 billion. Palinka retained its leading position both in terms of value and quantity. Traditional, small stores still maintain their strong position in the sales of spirits. The below 400 square meter channel showed sales of 49 per cent in terms of quantity, which is only 2 per cent less than a year before. Palinka retained a 69 per cent market share in the neighbourhood stores. Average consumer prices showed an increase this year compared to last year, with the exception of whisky and vermouth. The average price of palinka increased by 8 per cent last year.
