Beetroot is becoming more and more popular among Hungarian consumers
There is a real superfood on Hungarian soil, beetroot, rich in vitamins and minerals, is being grown by farmers in an ever-increasing area, according to the joint market overview of the National Chamber of Agriculture and the Hungarian Vegetable and Fruit Association, FruitVeB. The success is no accident, as more and more people are recognizing the benefits of the versatile vegetable.
Beetroot is becoming increasingly popular among domestic consumers. The constantly growing demand is no accident, as beetroot is a real superfood: on the one hand, it is delicious and versatile, so it fits well into a healthy and balanced diet, and on the other hand, it is available and can be consumed all year round. Beetroot is a vegetable that can be prepared in many ways, and can be used in many ways in the kitchen, such as in salads, soups, pickled, and is also a great choice as a side dish. But it can also be used as a vegetable, crisp, or even in cakes. Based on the joint estimate of the National Chamber of Agriculture and the Fruit and Vegetable Association, FruitVeB, the beet growing area increased by 49 percent between 2021 and 2022, so that today farmers grow beet on 343 hectares. In addition to the expansion of the area, the efficiency of production is also constantly improving. While producers harvested 41 tons per hectare between 2013-2017, the average yield reached 55 tons between 2018-2022.
Beetroot is called a superfood for a reason
A source of potassium, calcium, iron, silicon and magnesium, but also contains copper, zinc, manganese, sulphur, iodine, cobalt, chromium, nickel, vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C, folic acid, niacin and biotin too. The ancient Romans consumed beet juice to treat fever and constipation, and it was also considered an aphrodisiac. It helps wound healing and the building of muscle tissue, its nitrate content can promote blood flow. The beneficial effect of beetroot’s high nitrate content can also be felt during exercise, it improves the body’s use of oxygen, and the abundance of potassium is good for the muscles. Many people drink vegetable juice, it is a popular ingredient in smoothies. Beetroot has a strong liver cleansing effect and also strengthens the intestinal system. The betaine found in vegetables helps break down fats, has a fat-burning effect, and with its regular consumption, we can also support the continuous renewal of the skin. NAK
