DRS System in Hungary: Tips for Successful Returns
On January 1, 2024, Hungary launched the DRS (Deposit Return System), enabling the return of single-use beverage containers – including metal, PET, and glass bottles – ranging from 0.1 to 3 liters. The system aims to promote eco-friendly waste management and reduce the environmental impact of single-use packaging. However, its success also depends on consumer cooperation.
How Does the DRS System Work?
The DRS system is available at over 3,200 automated and manual return points across the country. In addition to mandatory participants, 2,000 stores voluntarily offer return options. Consumers receive a uniform refund of 50 HUF per item for single-use beverage containers.
For multi-use packaging, the refund value is determined by the manufacturers and can vary by product type.
Tips for a Smooth Return Process
Márk Pusztai, representative of the “Every Bottle Counts” program, shared key tips for ensuring a seamless return experience:
- Empty and Clean Containers:
Beverage containers should be empty and clean, although washing them is unnecessary. - Caps Loosely Attached:
Keep the caps on but not tightly screwed, allowing air to flow and preventing deformation. - Avoid Crushing Containers:
Damaged or crushed containers are not eligible for a refund, so ensure bottles and cans remain intact. - Preserve Barcodes:
Return machines and apps rely on barcodes for identification, so maintaining the barcode’s integrity is crucial. - Utilize REpoint Partner Locations:
Single-use containers can be returned at any REpoint Partner. Multi-use containers are returnable only where the specific product is sold.
Consumer Initiative: Expanding the Network
Consumers can help expand the return network by encouraging stores, kiosks, or gas stations to join the system. Márk Pusztai highlighted that businesses can receive handling fees from MOHU and benefit from free collection and logistical support for returned containers.
Sustainable Future Through Shared Responsibility
The launch of the DRS system is a significant step towards sustainability, but its success hinges on consumer awareness and responsible behavior. By following simple guidelines, everyone can contribute to environmentally conscious waste management while earning financial incentives for returned containers. This initiative not only protects our environment but also strengthens responsible consumer habits across Hungary.
