Bio-waste: A massive change of attitude is required!
From January 2024, in accordance with European Union directives, the selective collection of organic waste generated in households will be mandatory in Hungary, although there is still little information available on the details. According to the latest research by Reacty Digital, barely half of the Hungarian population is aware of this measure, and currently only a quarter separates their garden and kitchen waste. In this article, we scrutinize the practice of residential biowaste management and the related changes.
This article is the second part of a 2-part article series, in the first part we summarized the public’s reactions to the deposit fee system for bottles.
Selective waste collection in Hungary
In line with international trends, the selective collection of household waste is an increasingly important issue among Hungarians, nine out of ten said that this is important to them. As we wrote about earlier, four fifths of the population selectively treat at least one type of waste. A third of households generate plastic and paper waste every day, while the management of organic waste, glass and metal cans is a task to be solved at least once a week in half of the homes.
