The Guild of Hungarian Restaurateurs (MVI) publishes an annual statistical report on the hospitality sector. It is mainly based on data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) for 2024. The second part of our summary of the report deals with turnover and labour market data.

In 2023 hospitality units realised a gross turnover of HUF 2,338bn and according to preliminary data, this figure had been HUF 2,672bn in 2024, which represents a 14% rise at current prices, as highlighted in the report prepared by Károly Zerényi (advisor to the president of MVI). Commercial hospitality was responsible for 89% of the 2024 turnover or HUF 2,385bn, while HUF 287bn came from workplace, event and public hospitality. Consumer prices in hospitality rose by 8.4% in 2024 compared to the previous year. In 2024 30% of turnover concentrated in the summer period (June–August).

Headcount and average earnings

In 2024 the accommodation and hospitality sector employed 180,600 people (about three-quarters of them in hospitality), which represented 3.8% of the total national economy. The number of people employed decreased compared to the same period of the previous year. In the hospitality sector the average gross monthly wage of full-time employees was HUF 386,000 in 2024, which was 13.8% higher than a year earlier and corresponded to 60% of the national average. The average monthly net wage adjusted for benefits in the hospitality sector was HUF 270,000. The monthly gross income – including service charges – in accommodation and hospitality (HUF 453,000) increased by 13.6% compared to 2023; the gross income was 9.1% higher than the average wage.
