Asda’s tea filters are now made from plant-based materials
Tea lovers not only support their health by sipping their favorite hot drink, but they can do it in an environmentally friendly way. The filters produced by Asda are made in a new way by the manufacturer of the supermarket’s own brand products.
With the introduction of plant-based packaging, Asda’s tea filters can now be thrown into the food waste bins, saving the supermarket chain’s 550 million filters a year from landfill. The new tea bags are made from PLA derived from corn starch, a natural plant-based material that replaces the non-renewable oil-based plastic bags previously used. Over the next six months, Asda will introduce the new range of filters across its range, from Just Essentials teas to Extra Special brands.
Jon Wells, packaging technologist at Asda, said: “We know our customers want to do everything they can to reduce their impact on the environment and we want to make this as easy as possible for them.
