Generation Z is teaching their older colleagues how to use artificial intelligence
New global research from the International Workplace Group (IWG), the world’s leading workplace provider, shows that Gen Z workers are playing a key role in the adoption of AI in the workplace. They are helping older colleagues learn new technology, which increases productivity and improves collaboration.
The research, conducted among more than 2,000 people in the US and UK, shows that AI is increasingly becoming a core part of the daily operations of teams, especially hybrid workgroups. 80% of those surveyed have experimented with AI tools, and 78% reported that using them has saved them an average of 55 minutes per day, which is the equivalent of almost a full working day per week.
86% of respondents said that AI helps them complete tasks more efficiently, while 76% found that it directly accelerated their career progression – this figure for Gen Z workers is 87%.
Cross-generational collaboration is key to reaping the benefits of AI
Cross-generational collaboration is central to the adoption of AI in the workplace. Nearly two-thirds (59%) of younger workers actively help older, more experienced colleagues learn how to use AI tools. 80% of middle managers say this support allows them to focus on higher-value tasks, while 82% report that AI innovations introduced by younger colleagues open up new business opportunities for the organization.
Employees are increasingly recognizing the potential of AI to automate time-consuming administrative tasks. These tasks include drafting emails (43%), taking and summarizing meeting notes (42%), organizing files (36%), and entering data or filling out forms (36%). Automation frees up workers’ time for other, more important tasks: 55% focus on high-impact projects, 54% support their own professional development, and 40% build closer relationships with colleagues and customers.
