Hungarians regularly eat hot dogs, but they don’t know what they’re made of, according to a study
95 percent of the Hungarian population regularly consumes hot dogs, but a quarter of them are completely unaware of what they are made of – this was revealed in a representative survey sent to MTI by PICK Szeged Zrt.
According to the survey, 77 percent of those surveyed do not look at the product ingredients, while 49 percent choose a reliable brand, and 39 percent specifically look for hot dogs made from high-quality ingredients. The research also revealed that people over the age of 60 are the most aware when it comes to buying hot dogs – more than 40 percent of them buy a reliable, familiar brand whose ingredients they know.
Half of the customers are aware that, according to the Hungarian Food Code, the meat content of hot dogs must be at least 51 percent, but at the same time, due to the meat content moving over a wide spectrum even above the limit, 29 percent of the respondents do not know which product to trust. However, it is important to know that not all sausage-type meat products meet the quality standards of the food book, so not everything is considered a sausage.
