The head of the ministry also spoke about the fact that natural wines were included in the Hungarian wine law with the new wine law regulations published in 2021. The regulations determine the conditions under which the terms natural wine, natural champagne, and pétnat can be marked on the label. The regulation, which can be said to be strict, was created specifically at the request of the winemakers involved, mostly in their professional development, he emphasized. István Nagy added that the name Sümeg also received independent protection of origin in 2021, i.e. the status of designation of origin under separate protection. This gave the wines and champagnes of Sümeg a uniform style and quality protected by law, thanks to which they can be prominently presented on the market. The Natúr Sümeg wine event puts faith in ecological viticulture, natural winemaking and sustainability every year, he underlined.
The winemaking profession receives several types of support
Regarding the success of Hungarian wines, the minister noted that the winemaking profession has shown more than once that it is at the forefront in terms of passion, dedication, expertise, and the ability to adapt to new challenges. Hungarian winemakers can always count on the cooperation and help of the government. In addition to government assistance, there is a need to strengthen sectoral cooperation, continuous improvement of quality, cooperation in addition to competition, and the implementation of successful wine marketing programs. Joint action strengthens our strength, emphasized the head of the ministry.
