Lidl talked about is sustainability efforts at Fruit Logistica
The Fruit Logistica conference in Berlin provided an important forum for trading companies to present their sustainability measures and commitment to fair trade. Lidl representatives Hannes Langhorst and Vishal Gajjar also participated in the event and reported on the steps they have taken to ensure that workers on banana plantations receive a fair wage.
Langhorst and Gajjar highlighted the importance of sustainability and Lidl’s long-term commitment to the fair trade program. The company has long supported fair trade initiatives and now wants to further strengthen this line. However, as Gajjar said, wages for those working on banana plantations were not up to par, so Lidl developed a strategy to change that.
Among the measures is that Lidl only distributes bananas in Germany, the production of which workers receive a fair wage. To do this, the company convinced its suppliers to support this direction. Gajjar said the process was not easy as they faced many challenges, such as the complex nature of paying plantation workers.
