Food prices increased the most in Romania, but inflation moderated
In Romania, inflation continued to slow by a few tenths of a percent in June: according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Thursday, consumer prices were 10.3 percent higher than a year ago, after 10.6 percent in May.
Food prices increased the most, by an average of 17.88 percent, while non-food products rose by 4.84 percent and services by 11.5 percent.
Compared to last June, the price of sugar rose the most, by 55 percent. Potatoes (and vegetables in general) rose in price by 32 percent, butter by 30 percent, eggs by 29 percent, margarine by 28 percent, and cow’s cheese by 27 percent in one year.
According to the INS, medicines will cost an average of 4.6 percent and fuel 11.8 percent less than in June 2022. There is now a product among the foodstuffs that is cheaper than a year before: the price of cooking oil has fallen by more than 8 percent year-on-year.
